Mawdesley a Focus Club!
We are delighted to announce that Lancashire Cricket Board have selected Mawdesley CC as one of its Focus Clubs. The Club is now the centre of a Focus Club Community Cluster for the Mawdesley area and will be supported in continuing to develop strong links and partnerships with schools (primary, secondary, special education needs schools, high and further education colleges), local community groups (including youth clubs, brownies, guides, cubs, etc...) and local business and sponsors.
Across the 39 County Cricket Boards in England and Wales there are currently around 1,400 identified Focus Clubs. Focus Clubs are selected by County Boards on the basis that:
· They are identified as a key deliverer within the County Cricket Board Strategic Development Plan.
· They are committed to delivery of junior development programmes and/or development activities with specific target groups (disability, women/girls, and ethnic minorities).
· They are able to access and utilise ECB, County Cricket Board and local development resources to support the delivery of their club development plan.
This is recognition for all the plans Mawdesley have put in place and is a huge achievement for a club of it's size. Everyone associated with the Club should be proud of the part they have played in the steps towards Focus Club status; from the development of the junior structure and building successful schools partnerships, through the on-field success to the awarding of Clubmark status. Huge congratulations to the junior committee and all those who volunteer their time.
Mawdesley CC look forward working in cooperation across the community and with the LCB in improving and expanding their school’s program and providing a route for young cricketers to excel.

The league are exploring the possibility of indoor cricket, after a number of clubs expressed an interest in indoor cricket on the questionnaire.
The league are holding a trial match at Skelmersdale Leisure Centre, Digmoor Road, Skelmersdale WN8 9NL to see if the venue and rules work.
After discussions with Phil Carder (treasurer) it has been agreed a trial match will take place to see if the format and the venue is suitable. If successful a tournament would be organised for the following winter, if enough clubs are interested.
The venue has been booked for Sunday 22nd November, 3.45pm meet.
If your club is interested please email info@southportcricket.co.uk. The players don't have to be registered in the Southport League at this stage. One team is already signed up and the next team to contact me will get the place. Each team would need to be of 6 players.
As with all West Lancs indoor sporting venues, each individual would be required to pay 80p to enter the venue. For the trial match the league will cover any additional costs.

The Secretary has informed the webmaster that Prescot & Odyssey are now joining the Southport League. On Wednesday 11th November the league structure will be decided.
26/10
Ray Partington (Secretary) has informed the webmaster that he has received a registration form from Whitefield CC. Along with Norley Hall and Haydock, Whitefield were members of the Merseyside and Southport Alliance in 2009. Clubs who didn't qualify for the Liverpool Competition 3rd Division have been free agents since the end of the season and these 3 clubs have decided to join the Southport League. The league executive are meeting in early November to decide the league structure for 2010. The league are likely to hear from another potential member club by the end of the week.
18/10
The league executive have been in discussions with the Lancashire Cricket Board about some of the members clubs being involved in the LCB Shield. For the 2010 season the Southport League has 4 clubs involved in the competition. The top 3 from division 1 in 2009 have qualified plus the runners up of the Sandhurst Shield (winners were also in the top 3).
Preliminary Round - To be played by 16th May
Hesketh Bank v Salford MSJ (Greater Manchester Amateur Cricket League)
1st Round - To be played by 13th June
Hesketh Bank or Salford MSJ v Karmad (Bolton Metropolitan Cricket League)
Rufford v Mawdesley
Tarleton v Kotli (Bolton Metropolitan Cricket League)
Full Draw
Hesketh Bank have drawn a club from our friends in the Greater Manchester Amateur Cricket League, who we played in a rep team match in 2009. According to play-cricket.com Salford MSJ won the league in 2009. Rufford and Mawdesley have drawn each other in the 1st round and if Tarleton beat Kotli we could have another all Southport League tie. Good luck to all clubs who are representing the Southport League in the competition. The plan is for the same qualification to be in place for 2011 competition.
12/09
Both Haydock and Norley Hall have confirmed they will be rejoining the Southport League for the 2010 season. The clubs failed to qualify for the new Liverpool Comp 3rd division and along with a number of other club became free agents, after the demise of the Merseyside Alliance.
The league are in discussions with a number of the other clubs and hope more news will be available after the next executive meeting on Tuesday 10th November. The league are planning to organise the league structure at this meeting for the 2010 season, with the fixtures available after that.

Tarleton beat Aughton to win the new 20/20 competition sponsored by RewardAward. Aughton had beaten Hesketh Bank and Tarleton had beaten Chorley St James to reach the final. The finals day at Tarleton and Hesketh Bank was completed despite a number of lengthly rain delays. Many thanks to all involved.
The first 20/20 finals day was completed on Sunday, despite heavy showers throughout the afternoon.
Both semi-final games started on time at 12.30pm. Down at Hesketh Bank their semi against Aughton saw Bannister (37) and Sykes (15) score runs for Hesketh Bank, Sykes hitting one into the duck pond. However A.Barnes (3-20), including a fine return catch and Gary Hughes (3-12) restricted Hesketh Bank to 97 all out in their 20 overs.
At the same time Chorley St.James had a magnificent start in the other semi at Tarleton, with Foster claiming two wickets with the 2nd and 3rd balls of the first over. J.Dixon (21) and D.Thompson (31) eventually pulled the game back Tarleton's way for them to finish on 104 for 8 in 20 overs.
Both games were then interrupted by rain. Someone at Hesketh Bank said it was brighter towards Tarleton but those at Tarleton were unconvinced. Eventually a marginally brighter patch of weather arrived and the two games resumed. Aughton's response to Hesketh Bank was emphatic, with Nolan (48) supported by M.Harnick (16) and A.Barnes (18) crushing the hosts by 8 wickets.
The game at Tarleton was a little closer with a well supported Chorley St.James aiming at Tarleton's 104. Foster (12) and Dixon (19) set about the Tarleton bowling with gusto but eventually Ball removed both of them and tight bowling put pressure on the visitors. Even so on 41 off 10, 52 off 13 and 69 off 16 overs Chorley St.James still appeared to have an outside chance. Unfortunately, in their brave attempt, they committed suicide with 4 late run outs and were all out for 78.
It did not take Aughton long to come down to Tarleton and everyone then sampled the superb Tarleton teas.
Tarleton batted first in the final and D.Thompson (36) and J.Dyson (33) not out were central to a total of 114 in the 20 overs. More rain arrived but by 6pm the covers were removed and Aughton began their reply, which relied on K.Oakford 23 not out. Unfortunately for them P.McDermott was on form, taking 4 for 16 in his four overs. Aughton made a valiant effort but were 29 runs short, finishing on 85 for 8 in their twenty overs.
Immediately afterwards Chris Carney of match sponsors Rewardaward Ltd of Southport presented plaques to all the players, umpires and scorers before the Tarleton skipper held the trophy up to great applause. Andy Addison thanked everyone who had helped make the day so enjoyable and looked forward to repeating the competition next year.
Special thanks must go to Tarleton and Hesketh Bank for staging the games and in particular those who produced the teas at Tarleton and to the groundstaff at both grounds, without whom the games would never have finished.
Rewardaward Ltd continue to support the activities of the Southport and District Amateur Cricket League, which is much appreciated. As always clubs and individuals are asked to support our sponsors if they require any sports trophies etc themselves - Rewardaward - 01704 227850.

SENIOR REPRESENTATIVE MATCHES
Thanks to all who were involved at Rufford, both on and off the field, in the match against the Greater Manchester Amateur League. Unfortunately no further inter-league games have been arranged for this season, due to the admin time, holiday's and cup final's etc.
However things are looking promising for next season, with arrangements for three matches being at an advanced stage. The Greater Manchester League have suggested the first Sunday in July as the date when we would visit them for a return fixture. The Ribblesdale League have responded positively for a game against an Xl representing their lower two divisions, with them coming to us. I have also approached the Craven League, a league which covers the Lancashire and Yorkshire border around Skipton/Harrogate and they are due to get back to me.
I will keep everyone informed as things develop through the Winter.

FULL MARKS TO NEWBURGH CRICKET CLUB & FOR VILLAGE/RURAL CRICKET
Newburgh is only the 3rd (Division 1) Club in the Southport league to receive CLUBMARK Status and the first club in the whole of Lancashire to gain the Award in 2009.
Newburgh currently runs 3 senior sides being 2 on a Saturday in the Southport District Cricket League and 1 on a Sunday in the West Lancashire Cricket League. In addition we currently run 3 Junior Teams at <11's, <13's & <15's again in the Southport District Cricket League. With the anticipated influx of new junior members following this award, our future plans include the formation of an <18's Development team for those players who meet this criterion.
2009 has certainly been the year for Newburgh, as well as recently being award ECB Clubmark; they were also successful with their application for an Awards 4 All grant.
The grant was obtained specifically for Coach Development, Junior Cricket Development & Ground Improvements. The grant has enabled the club to acquire its first ECB UKCC2 Level 2 Coach (Andrew Kershaw) by funding his winter coaching course, in addition this winter (2009) we will fund a further 4 coaching places as we increase our qualified coaches to 5, which will enable us to comply with the ECB Qualified Coaches to Junior Players Ratios in readiness for the expansion of our junior section. We have also purchased invaluable coaching equipment and an outfield mower, which has significantly improved the quality & safety of the outfield this season. Further outfield developments are planned this winter.
Our Club Coach who is a member of the ECBCA and fully insured, in conjunction with LCB, and the West Lancs. Cricket Development Group is continuing to develop links with local primary & secondary schools, the intention being to encourage youngster to get away from their computers and into open space, fresh air and become fitter, and to join Newburgh CC. One never knows the next Freddie Flintoff could be living close to Newburgh.
With two months still remaining of the current season we are busy planning our winter nets for 2010, so young & old if you are interested in playing cricket then visit our web site http://newburgh.play-cricket.com where you will be kept up to date with club news and events.
In addition, plans are afoot to install both a static 2 bay practice net (to replace our current portable facility), extend the square with a practice/match wicket for junior cricket, construction of a new score box & to purchase a bowling machine. It is anticipated that these additions will encourage new members both Juniors & Seniors to join Newburgh CC and to improve the standards of all our players.
We share our facilities with Newburgh Sports Club & jointly we offer some of the best sporting & social facilities in a village/rural setting. We have a licensed club house which can be hired out for private & family functions. So don't be shy come down and see what we have to offer, our annual membership fees are some of the lowest around being Adult Sports Membership £20, Adult Social Membership £10 & All Junior Membership £5. Visit the Newburgh Sports Club web site www.newburghsportsclub.co.uk, where you will find up to date information about what is planned at the sports club.
Both clubs extend a warm welcome to any new members or players. Whilst the junior cricket league season has just finished, we will continue with their coaching/netting sessions and friendlies will be in place during the next few weeks.

In the first inter-league game for some years we welcomed the Greater Manchester League to Cousins Lane, Rufford on Sunday 5th July,2009. With the unpredictable weather that was around all day it says much for both teams and officials that a full game and a result was eventually achieved.
The Southport League batted first and Rob Kenny (20) and Martin Williams (56) were going smoothly, when Kenny was caught off the bowling of Butt with the score on 43.Paul Higham (26) and a returning John Dyson (19) aided Williams, whose total included 5 fours and a 6 as 61 was added for the third wicket. Adrian Halsall (24) hit a first ball 6 and then 4 fours and on 109 for 2 in the 22nd over a final 200 plus score looked likely. The first heavy shower drove the players from the field and an early tea was taken. Unfortunately afterwards the lower batting collapsed in response to the bowling of Butt (5-37) and Mahmod (2-17) and 152 for 5 in the 30th over quickly became 170 all out in 34 overs.
The Greater Manchester League responded positively with powerful shots from Dhar (13) and Bokhari reaching the boundary in style. Carl Foster (2-24) persevered and took two wickets in his first two overs, with the aid of catches from Mark Golding and Rob Kenny. Unfortunately he was hit on the hand trying to stop a powerful straight drive and was eventually replaced. Nickson (1-53) came in for some punishment from Shah (21) but Nickson eventually trapped Mahmod (12), LBW. Wickets fell at regular intervals and the run flow was stemmed with the introduction of spin in the form of Richard Bannister, who eventually had Shah caught on the boundary by Mills, and he finished with an economical analysis of 3 for 11 off his 8 overs. Bannister formed a partnership with Gary Derbyshire behind the stumps, twice deceiving the batters to achieve two smart stumpings. Greater Manchester reached 90 for 6 in the 16th over and it became clear that taking all 10 wickets would be necessary for a home victory. Rahram (72, including 5 sixes and 5 fours) had been joined by Wazim (29 not out) with the score on 90 for 6 and these two formed a partnership which was to decide the match. Southport were to regret one or two difficult missed chances as the score was pushed on over the 100 mark. The batsmen were not affected by a further stoppage for the weather and although Kenny (1-17) did bowl Rahram in the 32nd over, by then the score was 169 with 8 overs to go. It only took another couple of balls for Greater Manchester to achieve a worthy three wicket victory.
This game was played in the right spirit throughout and thanks must go to the Greater Manchester League for their enthusiasm in playing this fixture, which is intended to become a regular feature in future years. Ray Melvin and Bill, his Manchester counterpart, umpired proceedings very efficiently and the support and facilities of all at the Rufford Club were much appreciated, including the caterers, Goldstar Catering.

Hi
As most of you will know Southport Trinity have pulled out of Under 18 Division B.
After speaking to all team managers it was agreed to rearrange the remaining fixtures. This will allow the season to finish earlier and teams will have less free weeks. Also for the 1st round of the cup there will be no league game that week.
Any queries please let me know.
The updated fixtures are now showing on this website.
Many Thanks
Andy Addison
