PLAY-OFF FOR PROMOTION TO LDCC
PRESCOT & ODYSSEY v OLD XAVERIANS
(Southport & District) ( Merseyside Competition)
Played at Sefton Park CC on Sunday 18th September
This was a one off opportunity for a team from the Southport & District Cricket League to gain promotion straight into the Liverpool & District Cricket Competition.
Prescot & Odyssey were our representatives and went into this game with our fullest confidence.
Prescot won the toss and elected to bat on a good dry wicket. After a good start, scoring 29 in 6 overs when the first wicket fell. After this, things went from bad to worse with the team being all out for 118 and not using up their 45 allotted overs.
Old Xaverians commenced their innings full of confidence and proceeded to work away at the target with very little problem finally running out winners quite comfortably.
Whilst Prescot must feel extremely disappointed at their performance congratulations must go to Old Xaverians on their victory and we wish them every success for the future.
Sincere thanks must go to the Sefton Park CC groundsman for his efforts in producing a wicket worthy of the game whilst fighting all the elements of a typical soggy English summer.

Haydock beat Rufford to win the 20/20 cup for the 2nd year running.
The 2011 20/20 finals day was divided between the Haydock and Prescot & Odyssey grounds to whom the League are grateful for the use of their fine grounds.
At Haydock the home club hosted Dalton in their semi-final, with the visitors batting first. Dalton began slowly, with 32 coming of the first seven overs for the price of two wickets. Most of the top order got into double figures. Qamruedin (14) and later Hartson (15) kept the score going but Hewitt (4-15) and Brown (3-10) restricted Dalton to 91 all out in their twenty overs. In reply Haydock made a solid start as Ian Brown (45) had support from K.Parkinson, A.Pennington and P.Platt, who all got into double figures, as Haydock reached their target in the twelfth over, to win by seven wickets.
To the west along the East Lancashire Road Prescot & Odyssey played Rufford in the other semi-final, with the visitors again batting first. Rufford captain Rob Kenny hit an unbeaten 31 not out and they were able to post 117 for 6 in their twenty overs, with D.Fairclough (3-21) helping the Prescot cause.
Unfortunately Prescot skipper Greg Galbraith was out early but they recovered through K.Highdale (38) who was their top scorer. Brookfield (3-15) had an influence for Rufford. At the ten over point Prescot looked to be in control, with an asking rate of five an over and plenty of wickets in hand. Rufford then posted men around the boundary, forcing Prescot to run between the wickets. The Prescot batters just didn't seem to be able to turn singles into two's and at the end they were 111 for 6, just eight runs short.
Once Haydock had arrived from their semi-final, the teams and officials enjoyed the superb refreshments provided by the host club before it was time for play again.
In the final Haydock batted first, with Ian Brown being out early. It was left to Southward to contribute 33 runs, as the top scorer. Rufford's athletic outfielding and catching meant that Haydock were never fully in control although they eventually totaled 119 for 6.
In reply Rufford lost two early wickets before Wright (50) decided to take the aerial route, hitting several sixes into the next field though by no means all agricultural shots. Such was his dominance that his half century was scored out of 57 runs. Eventually, after taking some punishment, Gibson bowled him and that proved to be a crucial wicket. The score was then 71-3 with all indications that a Rufford win was 'on the cards'.
The Cousins Lane team then decided to carry on with the same methods employed by Wright but not with the same success. Very few runs were added as the ball seemed to find the friendly hands of Haydock fielders with some regularity.
To their credit the Rufford lower order fought back as they had plenty overs to spare.
Their running between the wickets was classic and they began to make real inroads into the Haydock total. With the last Rufford batters at the wicket Rufford need 14 off 12 balls to win but fittingly it was Haydock captain Brown who took the last Rufford wicket with an LBW on the first ball of the eighteenth over, for Rufford to finished on 106 all out. Both finalists and umpires shook hands at the end and then the large crowd of spectators gathered around the pavilion to watch the presentation ceremony. Southport League Executive Member Andy Addison thanked everyone who had played a part in a great day. The umpires John and Mike Lawton chose Haydock's Southward as the Man of the Match for his knock of 33 and three wickets.
All the teams, umpires and scorers received their mementoes before Ian Brown lifted the Rewardaward Trophy for the second year in succession. Everyone will look forward to next seasons final's day. Thank you to all those teams who participated, particularly those who played their cricket in the earlier rounds and who did not qualify for finals day. Let's see if a few more teams can have a go next year.

The League Secretary would like to remind clubs that this Saturday all games start at 1.30pm. This start time will apply to all games until the end of the season.

SOUTHPORT LEAGUE v CRAVEN LEAGUE (YORKSHIRE)
Sunday 31st July,2011 at Haydock C.C
After the disappointment of not being able to play the Greater Manchester League this game was a return for the fixture played at Cowling, over in Yorkshire last season, when the Craven League won by 8 wickets.
The Craven League batted first and had a ‘life’ when a slip catch went to ground in the early overs. This enabled Ainsworth (35) and Spokes (44) to put on 52 for the first wicket, when Ainsworth was caught and bowled by Lol Mason. The incoming Marshall only made a few until he was mysteriously dismissed by Gibson; being either bowled or stumped.
The wickets seemed to be like buses, non for a while and then two together. The third and fourth wickets both fell in consecutive balls with the score on 98, with Spokes being LBW and Neremberg bowled next ball to K.Parkinson.
The situation was looking promising when Duffy and Dibb were out with the scores on 115 and 126. Duffy was caught behind by the ever agile Harry Cross, whilst Ian Brown also bowled Dibb.
Meanwhile whilst wickets fell at one R.White (58) was proving troublesome at the other, particularly when he was joined by Copping. White hit 5 fours and a six being being caught by L.Parkinson off Nipuna Sudwella, with the score on 176, having added 50 with Copping. Copping (26) started getting ‘aggressive’ with a couple of big sixes. Yet again another wicket (the eight) fell on the same score when he was caught by L.Parkinson, off Ian Brown’s bowling. A smart piece of fielding ran out Brooker-Carey (14) and K.Parkinson picked up the last wicket in the 40th and final over, to leave the Craven League all out for 204. Harry Cross conceded just seven extras.
BOWLING FIGURES -
L.Mason 7 – 0- 31 – 1 N.Sudwalla 8 – 1 – 44 – 1 K.Parkinson 7.4 – 2 – 20 – 3
J.Gibson 4 – 0 – 26 – 1 T. Narayanan 6 - 0 – 45 – 0 I.Brown 7 – 1 – 31 – 3
After tea N.Sudwalla (24) and L.Parkinson (21) scored stringly, hitting along the floor to the boundary four times each. L.Parkinson was first out at 38 and Sudwalla second out at 66. This brought K.Parkinson (64) to the crease in a blistering partnership of four sixes and five fours adding 64 for the third wicket in partnership with A.Pennington (20). Thirumal Narayanan (31) knew where the boundary was with a 6 and five 4’s, whilst D.Rimmer (8) stabilized the other end. Their partnership produced fortytwo runs to reach 172 ( 23 to win off 6 overs). For the visitors Clarke bowled them back into the game by having Brown caught and Rimmer bowled in quick succession.
These wickets brought Harry Cross (19 not out) and K.Hewitt (8 not out) at 8 and 9 respectively. When Clarke claimed the ninth wicket with the fourth ball of the 36 over we need 28 off 26 balls but the target held no fears for Cross or Hewitt, as they ran quickly between the wickets including two three’s by Cross, whose 4 from the second ball of the 39th over was crutial as was the winning four by K.Hewitt, with three balls remaining.
The last four overs tell their own story.
36 dot, dot, single, leg bye, dot, single - total 185 – 6 20 wanted off 24 balls
37 dot, dot, single, wicket, dot, three, dot total 189 - 7 16 wanted off 18 balls
38 single, dot, dot, single, single, single total 193 - 7 12 wanted off 12 balls
39 single, four, dot, two, dot, two total 202 - 7 3 wanted off 6 balls.
40 wide, dot, four total 207 - 7 a three wicket win.
This means that we hold the Manorlands Plate for the first time.
The League would like to thank Haydock C.C for the use of their excellent facilities and to all the players, some of whom helped us out at short notice. Thanks also to the Haydock grounds and tea persons, who produced a great pitch and a great tea, both of which were complemented on by our visitors.
Thankfully we had a group of players who were committed and tactically aware enough to win us the game, something we have not always been able to say. Hopefully we have weeded out those who do not meet these standards and we can now move on and forget about those that don’t.
Next season we hope to get back to our normal three games and as always we would like to hear from any player who would like to represent the league via themselves or their club but beware ‘time wasters’ will not be tolerated.

Congratulations to Tarleton CC who passed their Clubmark site inspection last weekend and have now become the latest club in the Southport league to be awarded ECB Clubmark status.
James Webster Secretary of Tarleton CC "This is something we as a club are very proud of and is the culmination of several years of hard work by many people involved with Tarleton CC. The club is now in a stronger position than it has ever been with several ECB coaches in place and with many of junior players contributing well to our three senior teams. We are lucky to have a superb facility at Carr Lane and the award of Clubmark status will allow us to work towards developing and improving the ground further, to the benefit of both the club and the league".

TIPS ON SCORESHEETS ETC
On the front page of this website the match scoresheets are to be sent to Ray Partington.
The SCORESHEET FOR WEB SITE RESULTS ONLY, isn't to be sent to Ray instead of the match scoresheets. They are to be email to info@southportcricket.co.uk for inclusion on the website only.
It is important that clubs complete the match scoresheet correctly, as below are some of the issue's highlighted this week:
No points on scoresheet
If a team isn't all out the other players need to be listed
Wrong points allocation on scoresheet
Title for each innings to be labled correctly, with team names
In a game with umpires, they must sign the scoresheet
Before leaving the game double check the opposition have the same scores. For one game this week the league received 4 lots of different information and this effects the points allocation. E.G One team entered 151-3 another entered 147-4. This would effect the batting and bowling points.
It is also important that games start on time, two games on 23/4 started late.
Any queries please contact the registration secretary.

CHANGE TO ECB GUIDELINES - JUNIOR PLAYERS IN OPEN AGE GROUP CRICKET
According to the LCB website the ECB have changed their guidance on junior players playing open age cricket. Link
Players who are selected in a County U12 squad in Spring for a summer squad or in another squad deemed by ECB Performance Managers to be of a standard above 'District level' for that season are eligible to play Open Age Cricket. This is providing they are at least 11 years old, and in School Year 7 on 1st September in the year preceding the season and have written parental consent to play. In allowing these players to play in Open Age Cricket it is essential that Clubs and Coaches recognise the 'Duty of Care' obligations towards these young players.
This means that County Squad and Area Squad players, both boys and girls are able to play Open Age Group Cricket if they are in U12 Age group and are a minimum of 11 years old on 01 September of the year preceding the season. District and club players who are not in a County or Area squads must wait until they reach the Under 13 age group, 12 years old, Year 8 on 01 September of the preceding year prior to being able to play in any Open Age Cricket, again written parental consent is required for these players.
The Southport League have only just found this information and will consider how this will work in practice. Clubs will be given a copy of the guidance at the junior league meeting of clubs that will be held in January and also the full AGM.

HAYDOCK WIN 6 A SIDE
Last Sunday we enjoyed the new promotemequick.com sponsored 6-a-side tournament at Prescot & Odyssey C.C. Massive thanks must go not only to our sponsors, but also to Greg Galbraith, our hosts P & O C.C and their army of volunteers, the umpires John Kendrew, Jeremy Rowe, Gordon Halsall and Dave Lee, together with the various scorers and officials.
Sadly the number of teams was reduced from the planned 12 to 5, thanks to a number of late withdrawals and 'no shows'. However those that were there really enjoyed themselves, both on and off the field. 6-a-side is an excellent form of cricket, once you get your head round the rules, which we did after a couple of games.
Each side played each other once, beginning with P & O 'A' (82 for 0) beating Aughton (75 for 5) by 7 runs on the front pitch, whilst on the back pitch Southport College (102 for 2) beat P & O 'B' (94 for 6).
Southport College then went on to beat P & O 'A' (104 for 2 to 101 for 6) and Aughton (College 59 for 0, Aughton 56 for 5).
Haydock came from behind in the league table, beating Aughton (77 for 3 to 63 for 4), P&O 'A' (70 for 2, 66 for 1) and P&O 'B' (54 for 0 to 48 for 2).
This set up a Grand Final between Haydock and Southport College on the front pitch. Haydock batted first and lost Brown to Wardale's bowling in the second over. The College bowling was tight, as Thirumal struck twice in the third over. Only two balls cleared the boundary and three along the ground in the Haydock innings, struck by Redman (20), who together with Rimmer (18) and Parkinson 11 not out) were the main Haydock contributors. Sudwella took the 4th wicket for Haydock to total 67.
The College reply had a first over boost with Sudwella (26 retired) hitting two boundaries out of 14 runs. The second and third overs produced 10 and 14 runs respectively, with Rimmer taking a wicket in the third. The fourth over proved crucial. Delivered by Platt, the first two balls conceded singles but the third produced a magnificent one handed running catch by skipper Brown on the boundary to restrict College to 50 at the end of the penultimate over compared to Haydock's 52 at that stage. This catch was to be the deciding factor in the game. The last over had some fascinating twists of fortune between the two teams. It was bowled by Brown and after a dot ball and a single, he took a wicket, with College still needing 17 with three balls left. Kumar then hit a boundary '6' - College wanted 11 off two balls. Brown then conceded a single and then gave College some hope with a wide (4 runs). College had one more ball to score 6 for an outright win or 5 to win by less wickets. Brown made sure that he only conceded a single off the last ball to secure the trophy for Haydock.
On the back pitch the Runners Up final was between P & O 'A' and Aughton. P&O 'A' batted first with Crookes (30), Galbraith (34) and Hogan (27) all retiring before a final total of 116 for 0 was reached. Aughton tried valiantly through Rogue (33 retired) and Cullum 21 but a tight final over from Galbraith, with only 9 conceded, meant Aughton finished on 110 for 2 only 7 short of their target.
Thanks once again to everyone involved in this event. There were a lot of good comments at the end and I am sure, with some fine tuning, that it will take place again next year.
All those present should make sure they have a ticket for the League Presentation Night, when they can show their appreciation to Haydock as they receive the promotemequick.com trophy.
Finally ,to some of us the most important thing at any cricket match is the food, which was great. Perhaps next year we can have a six-a-side sausage butty eating contest to run alongside the 6-a-side cricket !

On Sunday the Senior Representative Xl achieved their first win since being reformed, against the Greater Manchester Amateur League at Houghton Green C.C in Denton.
Batting first we were 21 for 2 after 7 overs, following which we recovered to 77 for 3, thanks to a partnership of 56 between Steve Howe (Portland Wine) (42) and Stuart Little (Bretherton) (14). Unfortunately we lapsed again and 77 for 3 became 99 for 6 in the 17th over. Skipper John Dyson (Tarleton) (42) began a partnership with Ricky Lyons (Rufford) during which Ricky began hitting the bowlers all over the place. By the time Dyson was LBW in the 27th over 71 more runs had been added for the 7th wicket and Lyons was well on his way to a phenomenal 139 not out. This comprised 14 6's, 6 4s, 5 2s, 1 3 and 18 singles, the ball disappearing several times out of the ground and even over adjacent houses. After the 8th wicket fell with the score on 170 he was partnered by Gary Darbyshire (Winstanley Park) (27 not out)who , between the two of them, put on an unbroken stand of 130 in 14 overs. In the final over Lyons hit five sixes to bring the total to 300 for 8. His century came up in 69 balls and his 139 was off 77 balls.
Picture 1: Ricky celebrating his century
Picture 2: Ricky smacks another six over the house
When Greater Manchester batted openers S.Shah (47) and A.Bukarhi (15) started where Lyons had left off. The first wicket cost 53 runs before Lyons caught and bowled Bukhari (15) in the 7th over but S.Shah maintained his devastating hitting with 5 sixes, if anything going further than those hit by Lyons. If he maintained this assault then overhauling 300 was not impossible.Ricky Lyons took the wicket of Drubha (14) with the first ball of the 11th over and the following ball ,after several chances were spurned ,Shah was eventually caught by Tony Bennet (Goose Green) on the boundary. Greater Manchester then recovered thanks to Mahmuda (38) and Arif (40), who brought them back into the game with a stand of 75 for the fourth wicket, both being removed by the bowling of Ryan Owerkerke, firstly having Mamudha stumped by his Winstanley Park colleague Gary Derbyshire and then bowling Arif. Greater Manchester kept up the required run rate but were losing wickets. Gary Darbyshire made another stumping, this time off the bowling of John Dyson with the score on 191 for 6, followed quickly by Ryan Owerkerke bowling Gondal. A run out and a catch by Steve Howe off that man Lyons continued the good work. A.Shah (25) had remained steadfast at the other end until he was finally bowled by Darren Le Marinel in the 36th over to achieve a 76 run win for the Southport League.
The final bowling figures were - R.Lyons 7 - 1 - 43 - 4, D.Le Marinel 6.1 - 0 - 60 - 1,
D.Kirk 3 - 0 - 26 - 0 R.Johnson 3 - 0 - 19 - 0
R.Owerkerke 8 - 0 - 31 - 3 J.Dyson 8 - 0 - 38 - 1
Southport League - J.Dyson (Tarleton), A.Bennet (Goose Green), R.Kenny (Rufford), S.Howe (Portland Wine), S.Little (Bretherton), D.Le Marinel (Hesketh Bank), D.Kirk (Hesketh Bank), R.Lyons (Rufford), R.Owerkerke (Winstanley Park), G.Darbyshire (Winstanley Park), R.Johnson (Tarleton).
All in all it was reported that 16 balls were lost during this match. I think Ricky claims the M.O.M award !
Our thanks must go to our hosts the Greater Manchester Amateur Cricket League for their enjoyable hospitality, for playing the game in the right spirit and being great opponents again. Not to forget the people at Houghton Green C.C who had made the game possible. We look forward to you all coming to the Southport area next year.

Mawdesley a Focus Club!
We are delighted to announce that Lancashire Cricket Board have selected Mawdesley CC as one of its Focus Clubs. The Club is now the centre of a Focus Club Community Cluster for the Mawdesley area and will be supported in continuing to develop strong links and partnerships with schools (primary, secondary, special education needs schools, high and further education colleges), local community groups (including youth clubs, brownies, guides, cubs, etc...) and local business and sponsors.
Across the 39 County Cricket Boards in England and Wales there are currently around 1,400 identified Focus Clubs. Focus Clubs are selected by County Boards on the basis that:
· They are identified as a key deliverer within the County Cricket Board Strategic Development Plan.
· They are committed to delivery of junior development programmes and/or development activities with specific target groups (disability, women/girls, and ethnic minorities).
· They are able to access and utilise ECB, County Cricket Board and local development resources to support the delivery of their club development plan.
This is recognition for all the plans Mawdesley have put in place and is a huge achievement for a club of it's size. Everyone associated with the Club should be proud of the part they have played in the steps towards Focus Club status; from the development of the junior structure and building successful schools partnerships, through the on-field success to the awarding of Clubmark status. Huge congratulations to the junior committee and all those who volunteer their time.
Mawdesley CC look forward working in cooperation across the community and with the LCB in improving and expanding their school’s program and providing a route for young cricketers to excel.

Today the league had a trial indoor cricket match at Skelmersdale Leisure Centre. The trial match was a success with participants agreeing that the format was great fun. Thank you to Graham Walker and Gary Southworth for organising two teams. Also thank you to Mia Faza for umpiring the match.
The plan is now to take the idea back to the league committee and see what place indoor cricket can have within the Southport League.

The league are exploring the possibility of indoor cricket, after a number of clubs expressed an interest in indoor cricket on the questionnaire.
The league are holding a trial match at Skelmersdale Leisure Centre, Digmoor Road, Skelmersdale WN8 9NL to see if the venue and rules work.
After discussions with Phil Carder (treasurer) it has been agreed a trial match will take place to see if the format and the venue is suitable. If successful a tournament would be organised for the following winter, if enough clubs are interested.
The venue has been booked for Sunday 22nd November, 3.45pm meet.
If your club is interested please email info@southportcricket.co.uk. The players don't have to be registered in the Southport League at this stage. One team is already signed up and the next team to contact me will get the place. Each team would need to be of 6 players.
As with all West Lancs indoor sporting venues, each individual would be required to pay 80p to enter the venue. For the trial match the league will cover any additional costs.

The league executive are meeting in early November to decide the league structure for 2010. The league are likely to hear from another potential member club by the end of the week.
