Hi

As most of you will know Southport Trinity have pulled out of Under 18 Division B.

After speaking to all team managers it was agreed to rearrange the remaining fixtures. This will allow the season to finish earlier and teams will have less free weeks. Also for the 1st round of the cup there will be no league game that week.

Any queries please let me know.

The updated fixtures are now showing on this website.

Many Thanks

Andy Addison

The league have been informed by the Lancashire Cricket Board that the 2009 affilation fees have been increased massively from previous years.

Lancashire have advised the following charges:

Focus/Clubmark accredited Clubs - £125
Clubs with Junior Sections (not Focus/Clubmark accredited Clubs) - £100
Others - £40

According to the league treasurer this could see the cost for some clubs treble.
Once official notification has been received clubs will be invoiced.

If you have any comments about the increased charges, clubs may wish to contact their local cricket development officer.

Due to the following advice being received from Alison Faiers, Ethics & Compliance Manager for the ECB, the webmaster has taken the decision to remove the adverts from the website.

The adverts were provided by a company called Clubnet who provide services and fundraising ideas to a large number of sports clubs in the UK. The league are in the process of contacting the company to inform them that some of the adverts they provide may not be suitable to use on the league website.

The Advertising Standards Authority CAP Code has specific rules on the advertising and marketing of betting and gaming. In particular sections 54.3 and 54.4 of the Code which state:

54.3 Care should be taken not to exploit the young, the immature or those who are mentally or socially vulnerable.

54.4 Marketing communications should not be directed at people under 18 through the selection of media, style of presentation, content or context in which they appear. No medium should be used to advertise betting and gaming if more than 25% of its audience is under 18 years of age.

At the league committee meeting on Monday the draft fixtures were approved.
Please find below the 2009 fixtures.
Thanks goes to Gary Hughes for compiling the fixtures. The big problem this year was that the Liverpool Competition have given Southport Trinity 3rd X1 seven home games in a row and seven away games in a row. As Portland Wine ground share with Southport Trinity 3rd X1 this has caused major problems.
The secretary will be forwarding fixtures to the clubs in the near future.

The junior cup draws were made at a junior committee meeting on Thursday 26th February.

Please download the cup draws.

They are also on the relevant part of the web site.

U11 County Stage Draw

This week the Lancashire Under 11 pairs trophy draw was made.
The winners of the Southport League Under 11 cup will host the winners of the Bolton League cup in round 1. Round 1 games to be played week commencing 6th July.
In recent seasons Southport League sides have struggled to progress beyond round 1, but if the successful side can progress they will play away to Wigan & District or Palace Shield (Preston)

13/02

At the last league committee meeting it was decided to improve the standard of the handbook for 2009. One idea is to include some of the trophy winners photo's. If one or more of your teams won an adult league trophy in 2008, please feel free to forward the photo to info@southportcricket.co.uk

The league has had a good response to the 20/20 competition, but is still looking for more clubs to enter. At the moment the only clubs to enter have been those with a team in Division 1. Initial communication has found that some of these sides intend on entering a side made up of a mixture of their adult teams and older juniors. It looks like the most popular format will be a league stage followed by a knockout stage. Most clubs are in favour of making sure they have at least two players Under 21 in the team. To enter email info@southportcricket.co.uk

13/02

Mawdesley have been drawn away to Lancashire County League side Woodhouses Cricket Club (Manchester) in the National Village Knockout. According to www.wisdencricketer.com the game is to be played on 31st May.

Also as Sandhurst Shield winners in 2008 Southport Trinity have been drawn away at Old Xaverians Cricket Club from the Merseyside Competition, in the Lancashire Shield (competition below Lancashire Knockout). At this moment in time the league are unaware of how this has come about. The league did send an email to Lancashire enquiring about the cup winners and the Division 1 winners entering for 2010, no response was received and another email has been sent. It also looks like Burscough have been drawn away to Old Trafford Cricket Club of the Greater Manchester Amateur Cricket League in the same competition. 1st round games of this competition for lower ranked leagues is to be played by 14th June.

08/02 MORE WINTER WICKETS NEWS

AINSDALE PREPARE FOR BIG MATCH

Ainsdale prepared for a big match next week with a win against New Victoria. They batted first and never looked like losing a wicket until the very last ball of the innings. The walls were hit at every opportunity and the runs started to pile up. In the end Ainsdale finished on 258 an above average score. In reply New Victoria kept losing wickets which kept their score around 200. Tight bowling and fielding from Ainsdale meant that the opposition didn't close to the target. New Victoria finished on 202.
Southport and Birkdale opened their 2009 campaign with a win against Formby. It took S+B a while to get used to the rules, as it has been while since they have participated in winter wickets. Eventually they got into their stride and racked up 261. After an impressive batting display they backed it up with a good bowling performance. Formby did well to finish on 223.
Next week Ainsdale and Southport Birkdale will play in a match that could go along way to deciding the title. A close game is anticipated with some high quality cricket being played. It is also expected that the match between Fleetwood Hesketh and Formby will be another close game. Both teams will be looking to pick up their first points.

Results - Week 2

Ainsdale 258
New Victoria 202
Ainsdale won by 56 runs

Southport and Birkdale 261
Formby 223
Southport and Birkdale won by 38 runs

WINTER WICKETS GETS OFF TO WARM START

The opener to the cricket season in Sefton is the Under 11 indoor competition held at Dunes Leisure Centre, Southport. In 2009 five teams will take part with Southport and Birkdale replacing Hightown. The competition is good preparation for the outdoor season and players benefit from the intense environment that indoor cricket provides. Organised by the Sefton Cricket Development Group this Sunday was the 1st week.
New Victoria scraped home against local rivals Fleetwood Hesketh with the game decided on the very last ball. Batting first Fleetwood Hesketh made a good start not losing any wickets. New Victoria bowled well and stopped the opposition from scoring runs with only 3 runs being scored from 4 overs. Finally Fleetwood Hesketh scored 231. In reply New Victoria kept it tight while keeping the scoreboard ticking over. The Crossens based side took control in the middle 4 overs of the game scoring more runs than the opposition. Just as it looked as if New Vic would run away with game, Fleetwood Hesketh took two catches and the game was to be decided on the last ball. It seems nearly every game between these two sides goes to the wire and both team mangers were nervous. New Vic had the slight advantage knowing if they didn't lose a wicket they would win the game. Thomas Cope faced the last ball and hit the ball behind point along the floor to win the game. New Victoria scored 238 winning by 7 runs.
In the 1st game Ainsdale beat Formby by 72 runs with a side much older than their opponents. Formby struggled early on and Ainsdale took control with a few run outs and straight bowling. Formby showed improvement in the field with at least one excellent catch and they chased every ball to wall. Ainsdale picked up runs at all stages of their innings by hitting the wall at every opportunity and cruised to a 72 run victory.
All teams can be proud of the sportsmanship and respect they showed to their opponents and this makes for a more enjoyable game.

The league chairman has authorised the attached adult league structure for 2009.

2009 League Structure

Any queries should be forwarded to the full league secretary.

The junior league structure for 2009 was agreed at the meeting of clubs in December 2008. Unfortunately due to teams withdrawing from some age groups and applying to join other age groups, the agreed league structure has had to be amended. Until confirmation of teams wishes to take the opportunity of promotion the final structure can't be put on the web site. The Junior League has a committee meeting on 26th February and after that date the fixtures and cup draws will be announced.
Any queries about the junior league must be sent to the junior league secretary.
